Faulty water heater disrupted students rest with big noise
Shen Dan doesnt think it is fair to blame students bad bedtime habits and obsession with electronic gadgets for sleep problems.
Instead, the 22-year old senior of public health major at Wuhan University discovered that a supposedly tranquil campus was too noisy to permit sound sleep
As a freshman four years ago, Shen was annoyed by the noise from a faulty water heater
Many classmates complained that they could not sleep well due to excessive noise. We felt responsible as public health majors to monitor noise in order to reduce it on campus, said Shen.
Shen and three classmates decided to monitor noise levels on campus.
Their four-year project indicated that their surroundings were much noisier than they should be.
According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, day time noise on campus should not exceed 55 Db. Nighttime noise should be no more than 45 dB.
The group divided the campus into 12 areas and placed noise monitors accordingly. It turned out that average daytime noise on campus was 60.6 dB and average nighttime noise was 54.2 dB.
These margins are high enough to disturb students rest and study, said Shen.
According to their research, traffic noise was worst at over 70 dB during classess. The noisiest places were the canteen and sports facilities.
The team reported their results to the administration but the reply was that the university could not do anything about its infrastructure.
We understand that we could not expect the school to relocate dorms and classroons or retoute campus traffic, said Shen.
However Shen has decided to produce standards for campus noise control when she becomes a public health professional.
Meanwhile, the notorious dorm water heater keeps producing 56.3 dB of noise, a level considered critical according t national standards.
It was so noisy that some students work up in the middle of night to turn it off, said Shen.
The problem was that someone had to turn it on again very early in the motning so that students could have hot water for washing.
