Should the civil servants be high-paid?
A host of CCTV said that a mayor only earns two hundred thousand a year but makes far more than the mayor. His overtone was that the mayor should earn more to keep him from corruption. It is the idea that we should pay the civil servants more than they want so that they may commit few crimes of corruption. In fact, how much is enough? If a mayor is a corrupted, his desire is unlimited. He wont be content even if he gets a gold hill.
On the other hand, we mustnt compare an athletes income with a civil servants. It is too infantile to do such a comparison. s price is given by the market but a mayors price is regulated or designated by the government. Now that we are in the market-economic society, everyones price should be regulated by the market. Unfortunately, the mayor is not elected by the citizens directly. We dont know how much he or she is worth.
Some people may think that a mayor should be high paid as he or she offers a larger contribution to the construction of the city. Sometimes it is true, but some times it is not. Being a mayor, a man or a woman can enjoy many interests such as exclusive houses, cars, and other subsidies. Whats more, a mayor is usually respected by people, through which the mayor acquires honor and reputation which are priceless. Of course, some mayors dare to make a fortunate through underhanded deals with scofflaw businessmen. It is another pair of shoes.
Anyhow, mayors and so-called secretaries of municipal committee are all civil servants who are not hired by tax-payers but by their leadership whose behavior was under the stakeout of the public. In spite of this, many civil servants squander the public wealth drinking Maotai and smoking high-grade cig as if their father were Li Jiacheng.
If most civil servants are clean and capable, they deserve to be high-paid. As a matter of fact, most of them are incompetent because there are much more civil servants in China than in those developed countries. That is to say, in developed countries a civil servant can do much more work than that in China, so we have to hire far more civil servants and the price is naturally lower.
I am not fastidious at all. One of the government budgets makes me puke up or queasy. In modern China, smoking has been forbidden in more and more places. To our surprise, the government even has the budget to buy high-grade cig. What a ridiculous budget!
The civil servants enjoy so many privileges such as half-paid houses, drinking Maotai, smoking high-grade cig, strutting in the street, touring paid with the public money, and so on no wonder more and more young people want to join them. Now that the civil servant has become a hot occupation, because of which the supply is far larger than the demand, we neednt pay them higher salary.
